The National Aeronautics and Space Act, enacted on July 29, 1958, established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It began operations less than three months later on October 1. NASA's birth resulted from the Cold War-era race between the United States and the Soviet Union to demonstrate technological superiority in space. NASA's early days were devoted to the space race, which evolved into a race to the Moon, with a major goal being a crewed lunar landing and safe return of the astronauts to Earth. Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969, landed on the Moon on July 20, and returned safely on July 24, achieving the goal President John F. Kennedy sent in 1961.
This set includes a Proof version Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Clad Half Dollar and an Enhanced Reverse Proof Clad Kennedy Half Dollar both with San Francisco "S" mint-marks. All in the original government packaging sleeve with the COA printed on the back of the packaging.
